A small studio, devoted to a few properties at a time.

Evergreen Landscape Co. was founded in 1998 by James Whitfield, a Cornell-trained landscape architect with a quiet conviction that the best gardens are built slowly, by people who plan to be around to look after them.
Twenty-five years later, the studio remains intentionally small — twenty-two full-time designers, horticulturists, masons, and gardeners. We typically take on eight to ten major installations a year, and steward roughly sixty properties through the seasons.
Our work spans Fairfield County, lower Westchester, and the Litchfield Hills. We are most at home on properties between one and twelve acres, working alongside thoughtful homeowners and the architects, builders, and interior designers they trust.
How we work.
Site first
Every design begins with a careful reading of the land — its grades, soils, light, and existing trees.
Built to age
We choose materials and plants that look better in twenty years than in the first season.
One team
Designers, masons, and gardeners are all on staff. There is one point of accountability from sketch to steward.
Quiet stewardship
Most of our clients work with us for a decade or more. We plan for that horizon from day one.
